The Complete Coffee Brewing Guide

Great coffee does not come from expensive equipment. It comes from understanding four things and controlling them consistently.

Coffee brewing basics

The Four Basics

  1. Grind Size: Different brewing methods need different grind sizes. A coarse grind works well for a French Press, while a finer grind is ideal for espresso.
  2. Water Temperature: Use water between 90 and 96°C. Water that's too hot can make coffee bitter, while cooler water can leave it tasting weak.
  3. Coffee-to-Water Ratio: A good starting point is 1:15, i.e., 20g of coffee for 300ml of water. Adjust it based on how strong you like your coffee.
  4. Brewing Time: Each brewing method has its own ideal extraction time. Too little time can make coffee sour, while too much can make it bitter.

Get these four right and any brewing method works.

Fresh coffee beans

One more thing that most people miss is the freshness of the coffee. Here’s how to keep your coffee fresh:

  • Buy whole beans when possible and check the roast date on the bag.
  • Grind just before brewing.
  • Use coffee within 2–4 weeks of the roast date.
  • Store it in an airtight container away from heat and sunlight.

Fresh beans brewed simply will always outperform expensive equipment loaded with stale coffee.

Where Should You Start?

If you're not sure which method suits you, start with what you already own. Whether you use a French Press, AeroPress, Pour-Over, Moka Pot or South Indian Filter, these four principles stay the same.
