When you buy coffee, you've probably seen or heard terms like Single-Origin or Single-Estate. But what do they actually mean?
Simply put, Single-Origin Coffee means the coffee comes from one place rather than being blended with beans from different regions or countries. That place could be a single farm, an estate, or a specific coffee-growing region.
The place where coffee is grown has a huge impact on how it tastes. Just like grapes reflect the vineyard they're grown in, coffee reflects its soil, altitude, climate, and the care it receives. This is often called terroir.
Most commercial coffee is a blend of beans from multiple farms to create the same flavour year after year. Single-Origin coffee is different. It lets the natural character of one place shine through, giving every cup a unique story and flavour.
Single-Origin vs. Single-Estate
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not the same.
Single-origin means the coffee comes from a single region or place.
Single-estate goes one step further. It means every bean comes from one specific estate.
Every single-estate coffee is single-origin, but not every single-origin coffee is single-estate.
